Is an external hard drive a good option for storing video and music?
spkmyer asked:
I need more space for this stuff but my Dell only has two ATA Serial controlers, so I don’t think I can connect an internal though that would be prefered. Im just unsure how the slower speed of USB 2.0 will effect me sharing files online through the external. I am also concerned about the life span of the external drive. I need opinions.

An external hard drive from Best Buy or Circuit City would be a good choice to store extra files. Hope that helps!
yes perfect but you can also use this service as well as
mediamax.com
Upgrade one of the internals if you need to save upload speed. The externals are great for storage of the items, but if you need to share them out it will become slow.
I would move all files from the second drive to another location (external) and then replace it with a much larger drive.
Internal hard disk is better option
Look out for external hard disk that has higher rpm as well as cache and those who has firewire connectivity.
Hope your system got enough Ram as using an external hard disk will require Ram…..
About the lifespan, its pretty much as a normal hard disk (you got 1year warranty, so why worry?)
There is also adaptor casing for internal hard disk (So if ever you wana use it as an internal hard disk, you can) on sale at most computer fairs, costs around £20-30.
I assume you mean uploading music/video from the drive to the internet. In that case, it depends on whether your internet connection is faster than a USB 2.0 connection.
I don’t know the exact speed of either one, but you should be able to find out both pretty easily and compare them.
As for watching/listening to the content off of the removable drive, I have never noticed any significant difference, beyond a slightly longer delay when first opening the file.
